EC-YP some thoughts in a blog

The EC-YP Blog is not meant to be a formal dissemination tool or diary for the project but an opportunity for partners and our key stakeholders to reflect from their perspective on the project. If you are involved in the project we would be delighted to hear your views.

Irish kick-off event

The Irish kick-off event for EC-YP was held on the 27th November 2014. At this event we recruited the EQUAL Youth interagency network, which comprises of number of agencies in the local area working with young people (16-24 years), particularly early school leavers, who are disadvantaged in the labour market, into our EC-YP Advisory group.
Over the last few months aside from attending the EC-YP partner meeting and BANA multiplier event in Rome, the Ballymun Job Centre has been working on localizing the EC-YP forms and supporting documents to our context. Furthermore, we are currently recruiting young people to be involved in our EC-YP Young People Forum. These young people will provide the “user” voice of young people and support/inform the project and participate in the EC-YP Advisory Group, design, development and evaluation of the project.
Most recently the Ballymun Job Centre has been preparing to host the EC-YP partner meeting in Dublin which takes place 17th-19th June. At this meeting the EC-YP partners will primarily be focusing on the development of the EC-YP Model Mobile Application & Web Based Platform and the EC-YP Training for Mentors Framework and Materials, as well as discussing the next multiplier event to be held in the Netherlands in October 2015.

Energy Verytale

A long time ago in 2015 there were three brothers. The three brothers knew all about developing attractive and interactive responsive web applications. They lived in the then existing country the Netherlands in a medium sized city of Deventer. The three brothers were very different in posture but also in their doings unlike what we have now. One was tall and smart and the other was thin and creative and the other was round and quietly.

One day, the brothers received a letter in which a task was set, the content of the letter was: “Develop a responsive web application for all existing devices, both mobile and desktop for the innovation project Extended Choices for Young People in VET, abbreviated EC-YP.”

The three brothers were immediately enthusiastic and wanted directly to start with the project.
The client who wrote the letter who is bold and with a smile from ear to ear was asked to join the three brothers in their office on the 7th floor to discuss the project.

The client arrived at the office on the 7th floor. The client found a glass room that reminds him of his three goldfish that are swimming in his fishbowl. The glass walls were already full written in web code language to develop the responsive web application.
The client saw something mysterious in the fishbowl, a kind of energy that he couldn’t describe. After inquiring committed by the three brothers what kind of energy there is in the fishbowl, the brothers looked at

one another quizzically ‘what are you talking about, said the normally quiet round brother. The client felt somewhat uncomfortable in the fishbowl in particular when they spoke about the development of responsive web application for the project EC-YP.
The client felt the energy as pressure on his chest so much energy came free. But where does the energy come from and how does it exist, that were the questions of the client and still remained unanswered.

The agreement that was made between the client and the three brothers was that the client supplies the design and that the three brothers develop the design further to a responsive web application for all devices that existed at that time as a smartphone, tablet and computer.
Together they made a first draft of the timeframe from start to finish.

The client provided the design of the web application on a beautiful spring day. When the client arrived at the office on the 7th floor, the three brothers were on that time busily working on the development of responsive web application. The client knocks on the door of the fishbowl, the three brothers jumped up so focused were they on the preparation for the web application.
The client walked in with a big smile after the long smart brother had opened the door.
The client was offered a chair and a cup of green tea from the thin creative brother. The client felt at ease with the brothers and immediately he began presenting the design. Immediately after the first words the client felt the energy back in the middle of his chest. He looked around in the fish bowl to see if there were magnetic fields, but yes as you know they cannot be seen with the naked eye, but nevertheless the client was searching for it.
Again, as in the first meeting the client asked 'where does the energy come from that I feel in my chest’? The three brothers looked at each other and laughed without answering the question.
The client continues providing his interactive presentation where the brothers could see how one and an other should be shaped. The look and feel that the three brothers saw was in the
then-known and acclaimed 'flat design’. Therefor will get the web application the right attraction with four basic colors. The client explained why the navigation structure must be very easy to use especially for dummies. Also assign accounts and account rights were discussed extensively. Everyone felt heard and released at moments critical points on which regard should be to develop the responsive web application.

The three brothers went full in to the development and all brothers were 100% motivated to make the responsive web application a success. The lines were short with the client and if something was not clear they could ask for clarification. The long smart brother began plotting outlines.
Who needs some developing and what should be the first developed.
The tasks were divided and the thin creative brother got all creative processes and tasks,
the round silent brother got all the process and all tasks relating to statistics and results
The long smart brother was in charge of the development process and took all the javascript code related activities and features itself. It was also agreed that the long smart brother will attend three European meetings. The client is agreed that he intends to continue the flat design like making icons and characters.

After eight to ten weeks fully develop of the web application, something happened. Tension ran. Was it the unknown energy that was once released? or was it a different kind of energy?
None of the develop & design team got it but still there was something. On a day, out of nowhere the tension ran high. The balloon burst. It was highly time to call all involved persons in for a meeting to find the right tune again. Once everyone has given his insight about the situation where he is in and that everybody understands the process of each other and responsibilities continued the develop & design team full good mood and with new positive energy further at the responsive web application. It was also agreed to have a meeting every week so that everyone understand where they stand in the project, which big obstacle some have to take and were the challenger are in the project itself.

Nevertheless, there is an energy removed which has caused the balloon snapped, but there is remained a mysterious energy present. What is it and where does it come from?
Suddenly something appeared. Both brothers the long smart and the thin creative were present when it happened. A gray hulk flew past the two brothers. They felt the energy and both were hit by a beautiful light flash in the middle of the day.
The magic revealed itself, Super Kenny is here he called! I am the great genius behind all the creativity, motivation and get you in excited motion, he said. Suddenly stood Super Kenny in the middle of the desk still with his wings spread and with his oval star helmet on. I am hit by all the negative energy that I’ve absorbed from all mankind. I’ll be petrified, he said with a nervous tone. What should we do called thin creative brother against his long smart brother? Our super Kenny is petrified. What does that mean for our project? Will I still be creative and do we receive still motivation and enthusiasm to complete the web application project successfully?
The long smart brother usually ready with a direct answer had to admit that he doesn’t know it too.

To this date, the responsive web application isn’t completed yet. The question is, will everything come right?

A note from Anne

GEMS NI is really delighted to have secured European Social Fund (ESF) support for our CO-MENT Project which is the model we developed here in Northern Ireland that is being developed and piloted in Ireland, Italy, Austria, Netherlands and UK as our EC-YP project.  Over the next 3 years CO-MENT will work with 570 young people in need of education, employment or training – we will share the learning with our EC-YP partnership and when partners come to Belfast early 2016 for learning, teaching and training activities (LTT) there will be a great opportunity for sharing experience through practice visits, case studies and development workshops.

Additionally, we will be able to introduce our colleagues in Antares, Ballymun Job Centre, Die Querdenker and Edumark to the Northern Ireland NEET Strategy Forum and its vision of “working together so that every young person in Northern Ireland is in meaningful education, training and employment.  In July 2015 the NEET Strategy Forum will launch the NEET Youth Forum, Website and the new mapping tool; we will arrange visits to the NEET Forum, including a meeting with the young people involved and an opportunity to explore the mapping tool which has been designed to reduce the high number of young people “dropping out” of the system on leaving school, further education college or Vocational Education and Training.

I am looking forward to discussing these opportunities when the EC-YP partnership meets this month in Dublin.

A note from Susan...

I can hardly believe the project has been running for over 6 months now! it is really great to see things taking shape with our first Intellectual Output (IO) achieved and our first successful Multiplier Event (ME) held in Rome 12th March 2015.
We have a great, committed team in our partnership with everyone working really hard to support our project objectives - it helps that we all get along really well too! We have a big piece of work to do and we are on schedule to achieve the second IO.

Right now we are all working on developing the Collaborative Mentoring Model with a specific context reflecting  the outcomes of the research carried out in their respective countries that precisely maps skills coverage and vocational context against the needs of the priority target group of NEET young people. Each partner will translate the EC-YP Delivery model into their home language in preparation for pilot.  Our colleagues in Edumark are developing the web-based application and will develop the online templates and forms for each partner country once these are translated.  We will have a Skype meeting in the next couple of weeks to see where we are and to address any issues or requirements for clarification.

This will be the focus of the work during our 3 day meeting in Dublin to be held 17-19 June 2015.

A note from Stephen...

As someone who has been actively involved in the CO-MENT project both in the initial research, project design and as a mentor to young people engaged in the project, I have been following the EC-YP journey very closely.  It has been really great to see the development of this innovative project in 4 other European countries – I have been assisting with the programme templates and the assessment process that the mentor will undertake with a young person and look forward to being able to work with IAG practitioners from Netherlands, Italy, Austria and Ireland and sharing our engagement mentoring model and the time banking across 4 Zones: Learning, Life, Leisure and work.
I have been working as a IAG Practitioner/Mentor now for over 10 years and can honestly say that this model of intervention with young people who do not cope within traditional VET environments really makes a difference.
